Byron Hansley Jr.

Byron's Story

Born and raised in Paulina, Louisiana, Byron Hansley Jr. learned early that the strength of a community is not measured by its size, but by the people who call it home. Growing up in St. James Parish and attending school in Ascension Parish gave him a deep appreciation for the people, values, and traditions that make South Louisiana unique. Faith, family, hard work, and service were not just principles that were talked about. They were values he witnessed every day and that continue to guide his life.

As the son of a longtime educator and a sales representative, Byron watched his parents dedicate themselves to serving others while working hard to provide for their family. Their example instilled in him the belief that leadership begins with humility, integrity, and a genuine desire to help others. It also taught him that every person deserves the opportunity to succeed through hard work and determination.

Motivated by a passion for public service, Byron attended Louisiana State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication with a concentration in Political Communication and a minor in Political Science. He later earned a Master of Public Administration with a minor in Global Leadership, strengthening his understanding of public leadership, organizational management, and effective governance.

Throughout his career, Byron has worked across state and congressional offices, where he gained firsthand experience helping constituents, listening to community concerns, and finding solutions to everyday challenges. Today, he also serves as a math teacher in Ascension Parish, where he sees firsthand the promise, challenges, and potential of the students and families who call this region home. Those experiences strengthened his belief that effective leadership starts with listening, putting people first, and delivering meaningful results.

Beyond his professional career, Byron has remained deeply committed to serving his community. He is a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and the 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge, organizations dedicated to scholarship, mentorship, leadership development, and community service. Through these organizations, he has embraced opportunities to mentor young people, volunteer throughout the community, and help develop the next generation of leaders.

Whether he is attending community events, supporting local businesses, or telling stories through photography and videography, Byron believes some of the best conversations happen outside of government offices. Those experiences have allowed him to build relationships with people from all walks of life and have reinforced his belief that the best ideas come from listening to the people he hopes to serve.

At his core, Byron believes leadership is about bringing people together, listening before leading, and leaving every community stronger than he found it. Those values have shaped every chapter of his life and continue to guide his commitment to building a stronger future for all of District 18.
